Abstract

Endoscopy is a medical tool at the forefront in the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases. Endoscopes play an instrumental role in the management of diseases. This entry focuses on the use of endoscopes for optical diagnostic purposes in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It presents the fundamental concepts of endoscopy, including the optical and mechanical components of a typical endoscope. A review of current endoscopic imaging modalities is provided, as well as emerging and novel endoscopic imaging technologies.
