In this entry, the basic tools in the biomedical signal processing (BSP) field are presented. It reviews the fundamental concepts of digital filtering, synchronous averaging, and spectral analysis in the special context of biomedical signals. The entry provides a brief introduction to the acquisition of biomedical signals; a description of classical techniques for filtering and signal averaging; fundamental concepts of spectral analysis while the problem of extracting relevant signatures from vital signals is presented. In each section, a few examples illustrate the problems related to the analysis of biomedical signals and possible solutions.
