Abstract

This entry describes the features of articular cartilage that are important to understand how it accomplishes its normal biomechanical function. The composition of the tissue and the arrangement of its components are first described, followed by general biomechanical behaviors that it exhibits. Then, an overview of recent mathematical models is presented as these models help elucidate how articular cartilage functions.
