ABSTRACT

The goal of this entry is to introduce virtual private networks, and explain their surge in popularity as well as the link to existing advances in Internet connectivity, such as broadband. Then, the security experienced with legacy remote access solutions is compared with the realized security the industry has adopted. This is an opportunity to look beyond the obvious and discuss the huge impact this technology is having on the total security posture of organizations. The problem is so enormous that it is difficult to comprehend—a “can’t see the forest for the trees” syndrome.
