ABSTRACT
This entry presents some basic ideas behind cryptography. This is intended for audience evaluators, recommenders, and end users of cryptographic algorithms and products rather than implementers. Hence, the mathematical background will be kept to a minimum. Only widely adopted algorithms are described with some mathematical detail. We also present promising technologies and algorithms that information security practitioners might encounter and may have to choose or discard.
