Abstract

The entry is devoted to the present situation (2001–2006) of libraries in Lithuania, a Baltic state that regained independence from the Soviet Union in 1990. The author describes general features of the historical and modern context that formed and influenced the Lithuanian library sector and presents the characteristic features, achievements, and problems of the public library network, academic and research libraries, and networks of school and special libraries. The institutions educating library and information specialists and conducting research and the professional organizations of librarians are introduced. The entry is a general introduction to modern Lithuanian libraries.
