Abstract

The term “specialty museums” is broadly defined and difficult to classify. The term includes institutions that do not fit into the traditional museum categories of Art, History, and Science. Specialty museums lack a single organizing entity and determining the number of specialty museums presents serious challenges. Despite this, specialty museums have some unifying characteristics, albeit ones that raise important questions about the definition of museums as a whole.
