Abstract

This entry traces the evolution, development, and growth of information systems in Kenya, especially noting the importance of Information Communication Technology in propelling economic development. The authors provide a historical overview of libraries, archives, and museums, outlining patterns and trends through precolonial to post independence. Topics covered include: national, public, academic, special, and school libraries; Kenya National Archives and Documentation services and the regional record centers; National Museums of Kenya, regional museums; and sites and monuments of national and international importance. The legal framework upon which these institutions were established and operate is highlighted. The entry also identifies some key personalities who have made an impact in the fields of librarianship, archival services, and museology in Kenya and discusses the role of professional associations in the development and growth of these institutions.
