Abstract

We discuss the general motion of the Earth’s atmosphere starting with basic energy transformations that drive the circulation, pressure relations, and the form the circulation takes in observations. We then discuss large-scale eddies that form on the zonally averaged flow. We emphasize the fundamental physical processes of energy conversion and transport that define the general circulation and how they relate to the hydrological cycle. Finally, we examine important regional asymmetries and human effects imposed on the basic flow.
