Abstract

Coasts are often highly scenic and contain abundant natural resources. Coastal environments contain a wide range of natural habitats such as sand dunes, barrier islands, tidal wetlands and marshes, mangrove forests, coral reefs, and submerged aquatic vegetation that provides food, shelter, and breeding grounds for terrestrial and marine species. However, coasts also face many environmental challenges including natural hazards and human-induced impacts. Coastal habitat loss caused by coastal land use, coastal pollution, sea-level rise, and other issues is becoming increasingly prominent.
