This entry reports on the plasma polymerization (PP) of acrylate and methacrylate monomers (noted methacrylates, generally speaking), focusing on the mechanisms of (plasma) polymerization and the characterization of the coatings which highlight those polymerization routes. Comparison of (radical) PP at atmospheric pressure with conventional radical polymerizations in wet chemistry—either free or controlled—is also discussed. Emphasis is placed on the reactivity of mono- and dimethacrylates, while a brief perspective dealing with polyacrylates is finally proposed.
