Software has a great impact on our lives because it is integrated in machines, business methods, education, medicine, and practically in every other area. Yet, unlike many other professionals, software engineers are not mandatorily subjected to ethical principles and professional standards. Despite their great impact on our physical and economic well-being, they are not certified by licensing boards as are physicians, attorneys, certified public accountants (CPAs), and civil engineers. However, the public expects them to have ethical obligations to the same constituencies as other professionals: society, employers, clients, and colleagues. Lack of adherence to such obligations has caused much physical and financial damage.
