Abstract

Recent research has shown that industry increasingly recognizes the importance of using appropriate requirements engineering (RE) techniques in software projects. However, due to the large number of RE techniques and the complexity and diversity of software projects, it is very challenging to select suitable techniques for a particular project. This entry reviews the state of the art in RE techniques selection. It also analyzes the major components and knowledge units required for a library containing knowledge about RE techniques. It then presents the basic idea of a knowledge-based approach for the selection of requirements engineering techniques (KASRET). This approach uses a RE Techniques Knowledge Library (RETKL) that contains detailed knowledge about RE techniques. RETKL is based on an in-depth analysis of RE literature and a survey of experts from both industry and academia. In addition, KASRET provides a systematic process and decision-support mechanism for helping RE technique selection based on RETKL. At the end of the entry, conclusions, outlook, and future research of RE techniques selection are presented.
