Abstract

Software maintenance includes making changes to a software system. Maintenance is a very important part of software evolution and system life cycle. Maintenance is often elaborate and costly, especially in case of legacy systems. Maintenance includes both proactive and reactive activities. Maintainers need knowledge concerning problems, tasks, processes, and techniques. Maintenance includes many kinds of processes. Important supporting processes include configuration management, documentation, program comprehension, debugging, and impact analysis. Relevant supporting techniques include especially reverse engineering.
