Abstract

Modern engineering artifacts are generally complex integrated systems composed of hardware, sensors, and software. Such systems are prevalent in the form of critical infrastructure support, medical equipment, transportation systems, and consumer devices. These kinds of systems directly affect the health, safety, and welfare of the general public, and the consequences of their failure can be disastrous. For example, consider the effects of a failed power plant, traffic‐light controller, or radiation therapy machine.
