Abstract

This chapter discusses plasma synthesis of nanomaterials. An overview of type of nanomaterials with a brief mathematical description on nanoparticles is presented. A systematic discussion on different semiconductor material structures from three to zero dimension is included. Physical process of pulsed laser ablation and plasma formation mechanism are extensively discussed. Discussion about experimental techniques such as photoluminescence and Rayleigh scattering is presented which are used to verify suspended nanoparticles formed in vapor phase due to condensation of plasma species. Optical properties including the concept of free excitons, bound exciton complexes, exciton–exciton scattering process, photoluminescence, and Rayleigh scattering are summarized. Various plasma-based techniques such as pulsed laser ablation in liquid, heterogenous colliding plasma, conventional pulsed laser deposition, and nanoparticle-assisted pulsed laser deposition. used by different groups to synthesize several kinds of nanomaterials are discussed. Nanomaterials synthesis process using radio frequency inductively coupled plasma system is also briefly introduced in this chapter.
