Probably the most extensively studied high-temperature superconductor (HTS) is YBa2Cu3O7-x, abbreviated YBCO or just Y-123 (T c = 93 K). This compound was discovered in early 1987 by Wu et al [1] and is the first compound found for which T c exceeded the boiling point of liquid nitrogen (77 K at 1 atm). It seems fitting that this material exhibits one of the most interesting and complex relationships between chemistry, crystal structure and physical properties of any ceramic material ever studied.
