The essentials of the microscopic theory of superconductivity presented by BCS [1] in their classic 1957 paper, and generally believed to describe at least a large subclass (referred to hereafter as ‘classic’) of the currently known superconductors will be outlined in this chapter. Exactly which aspects of it, if any, are relevant to the cuprates and ferropnictides is, at present, an open question.
