ABSTRACT
By affecting the most prominent source of sensory information in humans, blindness inflicts a disability with profound personal and societal implications. Some of the most common causes of blindness are degenerative diseases of the outer retina, like Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). Each year, upwards of 700,000 new patients are diagnosed with AMD, while a total of about 1.5 million individuals are affected by RP worldwide (Margalit et al., 2003).
