Using smaller windows in order to reduce the weight of the Lunar Module would require the astronauts to stand as they landed on the moon—a concept never previously considered. To demonstrate this was achievable and beneficial but not convincing through sketches and debate. Instead, it is thought that a crude full-size model be created so that it could be tried out by the sceptics. This chapter describes the pragmatic process of the trials and the principal findings, but its primary purpose is to review the benefits, limitations and impact of adopting such an “old school” approach to the validation of a brand new, contemporary Operational Control Centre design.
