Abstract

People spend approximately 30% of their lives in interaction with beds. With that in mind, it is of great importance to design usable beds in a way that will provide adequate comfort and health to users. Although beds undoubtedly play a huge role in people’s lives, surprisingly small number of ergonomic research has been done on the topic of usability of beds. One important factor affecting bed usability is the size of the beds. It is not a rare case when a user does not have enough space in a bed for comfortable sleeping. In this study, a description of certain types of beds that are in everyday use around the world has been given, including the recommendations for their use given by manufacturers and distributors. In addition, three procedures for the determination of dimensions of beds are presented. Two procedures involve the factor of positions of sleeping. This usability research included a total of 100 people. On the basis of the obtained results, an analysis of the usability of selected types of beds was performed. In addition, recommendations for designing the size of the beds were given, taking into account the factor that refers to the positions during sleep.
