ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we examine the current state of the industry, observe the trajectories of technical, methodological, market pressures, and cultural changes over the last several years, and attempt to describe the environments for innovations that will shape Construction 4.0. We address the opportunity with a global perspective and relate them to trends in other industries. We present a strategic pathway for leaders of project delivery networks to inspire and guide their stakeholders to achieve success through the integration of technology, market savvy, cultural identity, and principled purpose. Through the five sections of this chapter, we will discuss the Construction 4.0 transformation by first presenting the context in which the transformation is taking place. Then, we discuss the opportunities, ramifications, and challenges. Finally, we share closing thoughts on the future of the transformation to Construction 4.0. Some of the takeaways from the chapter include the potential for positive outcomes that Construction 4.0 brings, however with challenges to industry stakeholders who are not agile in adapting to the transformation. Also, as project delivery networks improve driven by needs and responses of stakeholders, the positive impact of Construction 4.0 technologies will improve. In addition, the built asset will be intelligent and learning, creating maintenance efficiencies and superior environmental performance. As a result, top performers will differentiate themselves through analytical excellence and skills to bring high performance to their customers and will expand their service offerings. It is envisioned that Construction 4.0 herald a new era of innovation in the construction project delivery networks that will liberate substantial productivity gains across the construction industry.
