Abstract

The oceans contain more than 95% of all the water on the planet and are the source of much of the water precipitated over land. Changes in the amount of water evaporated from the ocean and returned via precipitation and runoff from land can cause measurable changes in the sea surface salinity (SSS), sea level, and ocean mass. Measurements of these quantities, especially measurements from space-borne sensors, are yielding new insight into how the Earth’s water cycle is changing.
