ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an excellent introduction to graphene in the context of its significance to spintronics. The authors carefully describe early milestones and challenges in graphene spintronics. Subsequent developments related to the understanding of spin relaxation in graphene are summarized in Chapter 1, Volume 2, of this book, while recent advances in graphene spintronics can be viewed as a part of a rapidly growing field of two-dimensional van der Waals materials and their related heterostructures, presented in Chapter 5, Volume 3, of this book.
