Abstract

In this chapter, we will first review the research of situation awareness in medical settings that feature collocated, distributed, synchronous, and asynchronous collaborative work. This review highlights the essential facets of situation awareness and the supporting technologies that have been proposed and discussed in prior work. Then we will use trauma care as an example domain to provide a micro-level, domain-specific perspective on what these facets of situation awareness mean in the context of ad hoc, interdisciplinary, and time-critical medical teamwork. Lastly, we draw upon activity theory (AT) to present a conceptual model of situation awareness that can be used to understand time-critical and interdisciplinary teamwork and to identify the technological needs for supporting different kinds of awareness.
