Abstract

This chapter presents a selection of team cognition research conducted with the C3Fire microworld platform between 1998 and 2017. Twenty years of research has led to insights regarding both team cognition, the effects of using GIS support in emergency response, and the development of new methods for assessing shared understanding in teams and team performance. The C3Fire platform is a versatile tool that presents research participants with a forest fire scenario that demands coordination, dynamic decision making, and collaboration. The platform can be configured to illustrate various aspects of command and control and has been used by universities, military educational organizations, research institutes, and governmental agencies for various research efforts. Research based on findings from C3Fire experiments has accumulated at least a hundred academic publications. This chapter exemplifies the usage of the C3Fire platform and the most significant research findings concerning team cognition.
