Abstract

Expertise is an important concept for our society and as a result has been the topic of much research. The extant literature describes expertise of individuals as a progression through stages from novice toward expert. These stages and their application to knowledge organization, skill acquisition, and development, as well as distributed team cognition processes will be examined. This chapter provides a critical review of the relevant literature concerning expertise and distributed team cognition, and will conclude with a future research agenda aimed at simplifying the process of conducting comparative research between novices and experts within a distributed team cognition context.
