Abstract

The global security environment is shifting at a fast pace, creating changes in the character of warfare (Dubik, 2018) and producing challenges for military operations research (OR) analysts. The US military has new operational missions on battlefields and in environments that did not exist before this century (TRADOC G-2, 2017). The world is full of diverse and integrated systems, people, organizations, governments, and networks (internet and internet of things) with varied behaviors that produce complex situations (Kott, Swami & West, 2016). These challenges demand more data analysis, more quantitative reasoning, more innovative modeling and simulation, and more technical and intellectual decision-making to build versatility and enhance operational capabilities. These are the data-rich environments of the modern military OR analyst. Modern OR plays an important role in changing the military to become more versatile and capable of confronting emerging complexities.
