ABSTRACT

Across their northern distribution range, Rangifer subspecies are living under a rapidly changing climate, and some of the populations are decreasing (Vors and Boyce, 2009). Reindeer and caribou are herbivorous animals and thus rely on plants as forage for their existence. Foraging resources of Rangifer are expected to change due to climate-driven changes in the physical environment, particularly because of the currently warming surface temperatures (Walsh et al., 2011), the longer snow-free season (Derksen and Brown, 2012) and the more frequent extreme weather events that the Arctic experiences (IPCC, 2014).
