ABSTRACT

The extent to which reindeer are fed varies across different management systems in the world. This chapter focuses on common systems of supplementary feeding of semi-domesticated reindeer in traditional (mainly Sami) reindeer husbandry in Fennoscandia, and feeding of semi-domesticated reindeer introduced to North America. These systems include supplementary feeding of free-ranging reindeer as well as temporary feeding of fenced reindeer within free-range management systems. Feeding in situations when reindeer or caribou are temporarily or permanently kept in captivity for research or other purposes are also discussed. Various commonly observed health problems and diseases related to feeding are described in the second part of the chapter.
