ABSTRACT

Batteries are portable energy storage units that are essential in all aspects of modern life. Without them, it would not be possible to have a portable device and even the motor vehicles that we know today would not be possible. In the absence of electricity, our life would simply stop. Therefore, this chapter will present a brief history of the emergence of batteries up to the devices we know commercially today. However, portable energy demand is increasing, which demands increasingly efficient methods of energy storage; therefore, innovative technologies will be presented that are being developed, but that cannot be produced commercially. Considering the appeal for green and sustainable technologies, in addition to the devices becoming smaller and lighter, conductive polymers are central in the new technologies.
