ABSTRACT

96The unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii serves as a unique model system for studies of many aspects of cell biology. To facilitate the use of Chlamydomonas, the Chlamydomonas Resource Center (CRC) was founded in 1979 to provide wild-type and mutant strains, plasmids, and related items and services to the user community. The core collection currently holds >4000 mutant strains in addition to wild-type field isolates. The CRC also holds numerous other collections of Chlamydomonas provided by research programs utilizing this organism. The CRC offers educational kits, complete with reagents and instructions, that enable students to grow and perform experiments with Chlamydomonas in the classroom and at home. This chapter describes the origin of the CRC, its current holdings, available resources, and its operational policies and procedures.
