Abstract

Family-based study designs offer a useful alternative to population-based designs, particularly for studies of genetic contributions to conditions that develop early in life, such as birth defects, childhood cancers, or psychiatric disorders. This chapter will provide an introduction to methods based on genetic studies of nuclear families where at least one offspring has developed the condition of interest.
