ABSTRACT

Everywhere in the world, water supply and irrigation are fundamental to agricultural production. The main aim of water supply in arable land and plantations is to:

Ensure the elementary conditions of production using water

Increase the quantity of yield

Increase the quality of yield

Realize other technological elements through irrigation (e.g. fertilization, plant protection).

The quantity of water needed for irrigation of a given land area depends on a number of factors, the most important of which are (Goswami, 1986):

Nature of the crop and crop growth cycle

Climatic conditions

Type and condition of soil

Land topography

Field application efficiency

Water quality.

The added water demand usually changes over time depending on rainfall, evapotranspiration and the actual water demand of the crop.
