ABSTRACT

Osteoporosis, literally “porous bone,” is defined as a reduction in the mass and quality of bone and/or the presence of a fragility fracture. Osteoporosis can be a clinically silent systemic skeletal disease characterized by compromised bone strength, predisposing to an increased risk of fracture. Osteoporosis is common, preventable when diagnosed early, and serious though treatable. This chapter presents the pathophysiology of osteoporosis to guide clinicians to early diagnosis and metabolic interventions.
