ABSTRACT

From time to time, a research discovery or clinical project results in a paradigm shift in medicine. A recent example was the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003 – it ushered in the era of personalized genomic medicine (1). In a very short period of time, the principles of genomic medicine have been applied across a wide range of medical specialties to personalize treatment strategies (2), individualize disease prevention programs (3), improve patient outcomes (4, 5), reduce health care costs (5, 6), and revolutionize medicine (7).
