ABSTRACT

Citrus fruits are very much appreciated for their distinctly pleasant flavors and aromas as well as their nutritional value and antioxidant activity (Talon and Gmitter, 2008). According to data published by FAO (2014), citrus represents the world’s third most important fruit crop after apple and banana, with an annual (2013) production of about 136 million metric tons. Brazil and the USA are the world’s leading producers, supplying over 40% of the world’s current requirements (FAO, 2014). Other important citrus producers include Spain, Italy, Egypt, Mexico, China and India.
