ABSTRACT

According to the comprehensive assessment of water management in agriculture by the International Water Management Institute, one third of the world’s population faces some form of water scarcity. The World Water Development Report by the UN predicted that population growth, climate change, widespread mismanagement and increasing demand for energy could lead to a major global water crisis. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization indicated that 1800 million people will be living in countries or regions with absolute water scarcity, and two thirds of the world’s population could be living under water stress conditions by 2025. Thus, a range of practical solutions are urgently needed for the sustainable protection of water resources and the production of alternatives.
