ABSTRACT
Until recently, Australian historians have relegated people with disabilities, and especially people with intellectual disabilities, to the margins of their study. Over the past decade, however, a number of historians, drawing on principles from the new disability history, have begun to pay closer attention to people previously marginalised in our work. In this chapter, I briefly survey new developments in Australian histories of intellectual disabilities, and present an overview of the major historical shifts regarding these categories in Australia.
