ABSTRACT

Ancient Greece incubated the Greek Miracle of city planning, comedy, competitive sports, history, individual excellence, philosophy, rational medicine, and tragedy, and we in the west like to claim ancient Greece as our cultural ancestor, especially when it comes to Classical Athens and the roots of democracy. We have been less enthusiastic to claim, or even acknowledge, the oppressive fundamentals upon which the Greek Miracle rested, i.e. systematic imperialism, slavery, and the subordination of women.
