ABSTRACT

The abundant literature on the simulation of flow and transport in fractured rocks is full of important insights; however, what is conspicuously absent is guidance for applied groundwater modelers. In this chapter, a "textbook" treatment of an approach for the simplified simulation of solute transport in fractured rocks is presented. The approach is directed specifically at practitioners charged with developing analyses that incorporate the transport processes of advection along the fractures and diffusion into the porous matrix blocks. The preparation of this chapter has been motivated by occasional requests the authors have received for guidance in applying the widely used solute transport simulator MT3DMS (Zheng and Wang, 1999; Zheng, 2010) for the analysis of solute transport in fracture-coupled porous media. Although the material presented is not new, as far as the authors are aware it has never been presented in a form that is intended to be applied.
