ABSTRACT

In recent years, groundwater has become increasingly important in meeting water needs of industries and agriculture in developing countries. In the same breath, a lot of knowledge has been developed on how to manage groundwater with a view to sustaining those economic activities. With this in mind, the main issue remains as to how the knowledge generated at different parts of the world can be applied to ensure sustainability. While acknowledging the fact that groundwater occurs in large quantities globally, it is not immediately clear how much one can extract sustainably due to the complex nature of the formations in which groundwater exists.
