ABSTRACT

Streams are important components of earth's ecosystem. They are the natural drains of watersheds. A part of the precipitation falling within the boundary of a watershed is drained by a stream. Depending on the hydrogeology and meteorological conditions prevailing in a region, a stream may be an ephemeral or a perennial one. An ephemeral stream flows intermittently for a short period after a major rainfall event, whereas a perennial stream flows throughout a water year. An aquifer adjacent to a stream gets recharged during a rise in the stream stage above the groundwater table in the aquifer. A part of the recharged water returns back to the stream after the stream stage declines. The effluent seepage contributes to the lean flow in a perennial stream. Stream aquifer interaction has been analyzed by several hydrologists.
