ABSTRACT
The microelectronic industry has experienced incredible growth and advancement since large scale integration and fabrication technologies were introduced. In a similar way, photonic integration techniques are perhaps the most important enabler of practical, complex optical systems. Photonic integration is a relatively old idea; however, the recent acceleration of high-performance, CMOS-compatible photonic integrated circuit (PIC) platforms promises to greatly expand the possibilities for large scale systems.
