Abstract

Switches with shared memory are attractive as memory may be better utilized by all the switch ports. Switching of packets from inputs to outputs in a shared-memory switch can follow the behavior of an output-buffered switch and even offer higher memory efficiency. In a shared-memory switch, packets coming from different inputs and going to different outputs are all stored in the same memory. Therefore, the design of these switches must take into account the required memory speed and policies to make sharing of memory practical and fair. Memory speed is a major challenge for building a shared-memory switch. In this chapter, we discuss architectures of shared-memory switches and policies for managing the sharing of memory.
