ABSTRACT

Structural health monitoring (SHM) contributes to reducing maintenance costs, improving flight safety, and fuel efficiency. SHM will change the maintenance scheme from conventional schedule based to condition based. That means hidden area detail inspection will be conducted only when SHM system indicates initiation of structural damages without disassembly and reassembly. Damage detection by SHM system during flights will be effective to improving flight safety. 1 Furthermore, innovative structural design by taking SHM into consideration has a capability of weight saving in the aircraft design phase. Conventional structural design includes damage tolerance such as fail-safe for flight safety that is because of heavy structural weight. SHM will be able to cover the damage tolerance design. 2
