ABSTRACT

Many urban areas are facing significant changes in development and growth, particularly from rapid urbanization and economic growth. In this context, there is an increasing concern for sustainability in real estate development worldwide. For instance, there is a desire to solve real estate development issues by amending current planning policies and regulations — especially those that encourage smart growth principles. This chapter will firstly review literature related to the smart growth approach and its ten underlying principles. Several examples from Saudi Arabia are then put forward that engage with these principles to differing extents. This is followed by a focus on several barriers to real estate development using smart growth principles. The final section looks at the direction of travel for smart growth in real estate development in order to achieve more sustainable real estate development outcomes.
