ABSTRACT

There is a consensus that in order to lessen the impact of climate change, global warming has to be limited to a maximum of 2°C above the pre-industrial average temperature (IPCC, 2014). Furthermore, the stabilization of global warming will only be possible through a transition towards low carbon energy generation energy, since 60% of all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions lead to climate alteration (Riahi et al., 2012). This transition can be accomplished by using, for example, renewable energy sources (RES) that would help to mitigate climate change and also provide energy security (Francés et al., 2013).
