ABSTRACT

Everybody recognizes that access to freshwater is one of the biggest challenges for the human being, a challenge that gets ever more acute due to population increase. The World Health Organization estimates that 1.2 billion people in the world have no secure access to safe drinking water. Furthermore, inadequate sewage treatment and impure water can cause severe diarrhea, leading to dehydration and potential death. Indeed, this is a significant cause of death in many of the world’s children and these problems also affect many coastal regions and areas with brackish water available, making desalination a key option.
