Russia occupies 17125407 km2 (2015) and borders 18 countries, including two partially recognized states. Russia has borders overland with Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Belarus (Byelorussia), Ukraine, Abkhazia, Georgia, South Ossetia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, North Korea, Mongolia and, offshore, with Japan and the USA. Such a very large area is difficult to represent with clarity on a single geological map, but one useful two-sheet overview is given in Text-Box 9.1 following this Section 9.1.
